It won’t be long now and residents at Wooing Tree Estate will be able to take a leisurely stroll to their neighbourhood’s new cellar door.
When Steve and Thea Farquharson embarked on the transformation of their vineyard into the Wooing Tree Estate neighbourhood, they were determined to create a central gathering place where residents and visitors could relax and enjoy the best of Central Otago wines. The sophisticated new cellar door and kitchen at the entrance to the neighbourhood and alongside the underpass for walkers and cyclists is rapidly taking shape and is scheduled to be open this June. It promises to become a popular destination for wine lovers from as they pass by on SH 8B from Wānaka and Queenstown to sample Wooing Tree’s award-winning wines.
The transplanted Wooing Tree vines planted last spring along the estate’s 800m roadside buffer zone have also established well and will provide a stunning backdrop for homeowners for many years to come. The grapes from these vines will be harvested for the first time since transplanting in 2025.
There are now over 100 residents living at Wooing Tree Estate and by the end of 2024 an additional 50 houses will have been built. Since civil construction first began in August 2020, the developers have delivered a total of 283 residential sections and 3 commercial sections.
Wooing Tree Estate Development manager Stephen Cornwall says with the opening of the Wooing Tree Estate underpass in August last year and the completion of the greenways and cycle paths in January, there’s been a marked increase in cyclists and walkers exploring the neighbourhood and beyond. It’s been wonderful to see how the underpass has opened up access to cyclists and walkers of all ages.
“It’s immensely rewarding to see all the children and families biking to and from school. The underpass has been a gamechanger for families on the estate side of the state highway.”
The new SH 8B roundabout outside the Wooing Tree Estate entrance and the underpass were funded by the Farquharson’s and their development partners, an investment of over $4.4m.
Meanwhile there’s some more great news for families with young children in Wooing Tree Estate and wider Cromwell with Childcare operator, BestStart planning to start construction of its new pre-school facility next month.
The new BestStart centre will be located on Blondie Drive just inside the entrance of Wooing Tree Estate and will cater for 80 children from between 3 months to 6 years of age and will employ up to 14 teachers and support staff. It is projected to open in 2025.
